Woolooware Golf Club History
Woolooware Golf Course was officially opened in April 1955 by Mr Tom Dalton MLA. Then only a nine hole course designed by the well known Scottish Architect James H. Scott and built on the site of an old dairy, it was soon after extended to a fifteen then eighteen hole course.
Shortly after the opening a group of enthusiastic golfers formed Caringbah Social Golf Club. From a humble beginning of only twelve, their numbers rapidly grew to one hundred and twenty five active members, comprising Caringbah, Jenola, Cronulla R.S.L., Sutherland R.S.L. and Armco Social Golf Clubs. In 1956 it was suggested that an "Official Golf Club" be formed and after several public meetings Sutherland Shire Golf Club was formed with the first membership subscriptions accepted on 7th April 1957. It was later renamed Woolooware Golf Club in 1958.
July 1957 brought the first official competition. The Club competes in Major Pennant Golf when Club competitions are conducted under the auspices of the NSW Golf Association and has been successful with wins of the Pennant Group III in 1965, Group II Pennant in 1970, the Inaugural Senior Masters Pennant in 1981, Group II pennant in 1989. The Associate Members have been successful with Grade II Pennants, A Reserve Pennants, Silver Pennants, Bronze I Pennants and Bronze II Pennants.
In May 1957 the council donated an old garage which after being moved to the site became the first clubhouse, affectionately known as ‘The Old Tin Shed’. A photograph of this historic building is near the main entrance. Worthy of comment, if you look to the east from the front door of the clubhouse you will notice two large pine trees. These were the two pine trees that were planted on either side of the entrance to the Tin Shed in 1957. Plans were soon put together to build a modern clubhouse with amenities and after months of negotiations and financial help from the membership in November 1960 Clr John Dwyer officially opened the clubhouse which still stands today.
And our history is still in the making!
